Every closet has a section of almost-clothes: trousers that drag, a jacket that pulls, a favorite dress sidelined by a broken zipper. Most of them are one alteration away from being worn again — usually for far less trouble than replacing a garment you already know you like.

The fixes that pay off most often

  • Hems: Trousers, jeans, skirts, and dresses hemmed to the shoes you actually wear. A correct break changes how an entire outfit looks.
  • Zipper replacement: A failed zipper does not retire a garment. Replacing it restores coats, dresses, trousers, and bags to full service.
  • Waist adjustments: Letting out or taking in a waistband within the garment’s allowance can rescue trousers and skirts after a size change.
  • Sleeve and length shortening: Jacket and shirt sleeves at the right length look tailored instead of borrowed.
  • Buttons and small repairs: Replacing missing buttons and securing loose ones before they vanish in the wash.

How to judge whether an alteration is worth it

Ask three questions. Do I like the fabric and the garment itself? Does it fit well everywhere except the one problem area? Would replacing it with the same quality cost much more than fixing it? If the answers are yes, yes, and yes, alter it. Alterations cannot rebuild a garment that fits badly everywhere, and honest tailors will tell you when a fix won’t achieve what you want.

Fit tips before you come in

Bring the shoes you will wear with trousers or a long dress — hem length is measured against heel height, and guessing at home is how hems end up wrong. For waist and fit work, wear what you would normally wear under the garment. And if a garment needs cleaning and altering, say so at drop-off so the work is sequenced correctly: alterations and cleaning are coordinated so your garment comes back ready to wear, not ready for another trip.
