Most stains are winnable in the first hour and much harder a week later. The good news: proper stain first aid takes two minutes and mostly consists of not doing the things that set stains permanently.

Rule one: blot, don’t rub

Press a clean white cloth or paper towel straight down on the stain and lift. Rubbing spreads the stain, pushes it deeper into the fibers, and can rough up the fabric surface — especially silk, wool, and anything with a sheen. Work from the outside edge toward the center so the stain doesn’t grow.

Rule two: no heat, ever

Heat is the single most common way a treatable stain becomes permanent. Do not iron over it, do not use hot water, and do not put a stained garment in the dryer “just to dry it.” If a stained item goes through a dryer cycle, tell us — it changes what is possible, and honest information helps more than hope.

Rule three: be careful with home remedies

Club soda and cold water are reasonably safe first steps for many fresh spills on washable fabrics. But skip the cocktail of household chemicals: bleach on wool or silk destroys fibers, colored towels can transfer dye, and scrubbing with dish soap can leave its own residue ring. For wine, coffee, grease, ink, and blood on anything you care about, gentle blotting plus a prompt trip to the cleaner beats experimentation.

A short guide by stain:

  • Coffee and tea: Blot, cool water from the back of the fabric if washable.
  • Red wine: Blot, cover with a clean cloth, and get it to us — do not pour anything scented or colored on it.
  • Grease and oil: Blot off the excess; do not add water, which mostly spreads it. Solvent cleaning is what lifts grease.
  • Ink: Do not touch it beyond blotting the very surface. Ink spreads enthusiastically.
  • Unknown stain: Leave it alone and tell us where it happened. “I don’t know” is useful information.

Rule four: tell us what it is — and point it out

The best stain treatment starts with knowing what the stain is and where it sits. When you drop off or set out a pickup, point out each stain and tell us what caused it and anything you already put on it. A stain we can see is a stain we can pre-treat before cleaning, instead of discovering after the finish.

Time matters, but don’t panic

Bring stained items in within a day or two when you can. Delicate, light-colored, and embellished garments deserve the fastest trip. And remember: a stain that has been home-treated and heat-set may still improve — it is always worth letting us look before you give up on a garment.
